Meet Sami. Sami is currently a graphic design student at Flinders University. She is also a Young Carer Program Volunteer with Carers and Disability Link, accompanying Young Carers of all ages on school holiday outings, camps and retreats.

At the age of 16, some 6 years ago, Sami began to volunteer with after school and school holiday activities. While at high school, Sami completed certificate level training in Animal Studies, and used this knowledge and skill to expand her role at Carers and Disability Link. She took on a mentoring role, working one to one with two Young Carers providing support with pet care.

As Sami’s interest and skill in graphic design grew, she also took on some administrative tasks, designing, collating and distributing brochures, flyers and invitations. Over time, she became an important part of the Young Carer team.

“Having the opportunity to work on various documents for the program really helped me to develop my skills as a designer,” Sami said. “And the Young Carers are awesome! They are each so individual; it’s been amazing getting to know them all. Of course, camps and retreats are huge fun.”
In the financial year ending June 2016, Sami contributed over 250 hours to the program. Without dedicated volunteers like Sami, we could not do the work that we strive to do.

Thank you, Sami!
