Joylene “can always learn something”

10 - Oct - 2016

I am enjoying meeting new people and getting to know them. It is so good to be able to work with a small group so that you can get to know them better, and find out what types of craft or activities they enjoy doing, or are willing to try. I am also being able to nurture the ‘inner child’ in myself.

It is so rewarding to see the clients start to enjoy being involved in the activities of the group.

I have tried many different ways to interact with the clients to build a rapport with them, from bringing along some of my puppets, and watching the faces of the clients as they react to my bird string puppet come up and interact with them and then the client having a go at working the puppet themselves.

The way their eyes light up and they get involved with the interaction is a reward in itself.

I have also been able to provide some ideas for craft or other activities to try with the group which has been based on a theme i.e. Olympics and Christmas. I have found that I can always learn something from the clients and staff to help me on my journey to being a better volunteer.

I find that I am spending time during the week thinking about what one thing I could bring to the next group session to help entertain the clients and give them something else to do or think about to make their time interesting and special.
